Probably the most common soft tissue surgery performed on pets is the removal of masses, or lumps. Masses are tested to determine if benign (non-harmful) or malignant (harmful). If malignant further surgery or advanced oncology treatment will be available through referral. Early removal and accurate diagnosis of a lump is necessary to improve the outcome in your pet if the mass is cancerous.
Some belly aches can be life threatening requiring surgery. One of the most common causes for gastrointestinal surgery is foreign objects. Sometimes we just can’t stop Fluffy from eating things that aren’t food!
Another life threatening GI surgical case involves the stomach twisting and bloating. We can perform a gastropexy, a procedure to tie the stomach in normal position. We typically perform this procedure when we spay or neuter your pet before it becomes an emergency. We always offer this to Great Danes and other large, deep chested breed dogs.
Another common abdominal surgery involves the urinary bladder. Many pets develop stones in the bladder that can block the ability to urinate. This is a very uncomfortable and sometimes painful problem. In many cases we can use food and or antibiotics to dissolve the stone but in some cases surgical removal may be necessary.
